PvP in MMORPGs is an often desired element in games, allowing players to pit their skills against other real players as opposed to pre-programmed mob AI, providing a unique challenge to the game. However on the flip side, with PvP you run the risk of folks becoming frustrated with high level players killing them at every turn as they struggle to get their character off the ground. In DnL, while maintaining an open PvP concept, they strive to make the encounters evenly matched as well as provide some safety for those that are lower levels.
Player vs Player conflict will center around the kingdoms of Ganareth, with players fighting for control. However for those players that wish to avoid PvP contact all together, that will be possible due to one kingdom on either side being PvP free. This provides a safe haven for characters to level up without constantly looking over their shoulder. Another addition to PvP, that the devs have designed to help alleviate the 'gank', is that if a high level character attacks one that is significantly lower, there is a good chance that the lower character will be able to call upon their deity to smite the attacker. However this also means that lower level characters (and higher level ones for that matter) will want to stay in good standings with their chosen god or risk being abandoned in their time of need. It should be kept in mind however, that a lower level person attacking a higher level person will not receive help from their deity... they did pick the fight after all.
The developers have also created a code of honor for PvP. If a higher level player ignores this code and attacks a lower level one outside of a declared conflict (such as a kingdom attack or defense), the higher level player will turn 'wanted' and find that they are now the target of head-hunters. A player on the wanted list can find a price put on their head. The more infamous the player, the farther their 'wanted' status can stretch going from the baronial range all the way up to the entire kingdom. The 'wanted' player will be KOS to any NPC's of the faction to which he is wanted (i.e. baronial or kingdom guards). Players too will be able to hunt down the wanted players in order to earn SXP. However if you do find yourself with a 'wanted' status, don't despair. There will be quests available to allow you to reform and pay your debt to society.
PvP will bring with it some rewards in that the winning player will be able to loot money off the dead player. All items and equipment however will be safe for the dead player. Crowd control will play a part in PvP however the dreaded stuns and mez spells will have no effect in PvP. This limits PvP crowd control to spells such as root and snare types, allowing the affected player to still perform some activities. The PvP fighting itself can be quick and fast or slow and more drawn out, depending on the skills of each player as well as their stats. |
